In my book pile beside the bed, I have a book by one of my favorite writers, Sei Shonagon. Apparently, her blog became one of the great classics of Japanese literature. Sadly, I can only read the english translations, however I have been inspired by her careful lists and documentation of life in eleventh-century Japan – at the height of Heian culture.
My writing here is inspired directly by the Pillow Book. I attempt to capture Sei Shonagon’s clear Occam’s Razor-like writing style. Concise writing is a joy. I aspire to it, but I’m not always successful.
