storytelling…

I was surprised the other day, and even more surprised today to use the word ‘upon’. We so rarely do. And who cares?

The most common use, I decided, was in the opening lines of stories – told stories more than written stories I suspect. We often start with ‘Once upon a time…’ In those few words we immediately set the platform, the stage and space for a story. The normal expectation is that it is going to be a fictional story, or a fictionalisation of a true story; but definitely not some sort of documentary.

I’ve realised I hate going into a movie theatre and seeing the screen before the start of the movie. It seems positively wanton, sluttish. I expect there to be curtains and the screen is revealed as the story begins, once upon a time…
